Ram Maya's Story: From Struggle to Empowerment

Ram Maya’s Story: When Knowledge Turns Struggle into Power

Before the sun rises over the hills of rural Nepal, Ram Maya is already awake.

For years, her mornings began the same way—walking to her small vegetable field with hope, but also with worry. Farming was her family’s main source of food and income. But despite working long hours in the field, the harvest was often disappointing.

The soil was getting weaker every year.

Chemical fertilizers were expensive and frequently unavailable during planting season. Some years she could afford them. Some years she could not.

“My husband works in the Gulf country,” Ram Maya says softly. “He left so our children could have a better future. But when he is away, I must take care of everything—the farm, the children, the home.”

Like millions of women in Nepal, Ram Maya became the manager of the farm and the household after her husband migrated abroad for work. But although women do most of the farming work, they often have little access to training, technologies, or agricultural resources.

Without proper fertilizers, Ram Maya’s vegetable yields declined. Sometimes she borrowed money just to buy inputs for the next planting season.

“I worked very hard,” she recalls. “But it always felt like the farm was controlling me, not the other way around.”

Everything began to change when WISE Nepal came to her community.

Through WISE Nepal’s training programs, Ram Maya learned something she had never imagined before—that the resources she needed were already around her.

Rice husks, kitchen waste, livestock manure, and organic materials that were once burned or thrown away could be transformed into nutrient-rich biofertilizers.

WISE Nepal trained women farmers like Ram Maya on soil health, sustainable nutrient management, and how to produce organic biofertilizers at home. They also provided starter kits that allowed women to begin producing fertilizer themselves.

“For the first time, I realized I did not have to depend on expensive fertilizers from the market,” she says.

Today, Ram Maya produces her own fertilizer using materials from her farm and household. Her soil is healthier, her vegetables grow better, and she spends far less money on inputs.

But the most important change is not just in her fields.

It is in her confidence.

“Before, I depended completely on my husband’s income,” she explains. “Now I also earn from my farm. My family listens when I speak about farming and household decisions.”

Ram Maya now shares what she has learned with other women in her village. Together, they are improving their farms and helping each other succeed.

Her story reflects a larger transformation.

When women farmers gain access to knowledge, resources, and sustainable technologies, they do more than improve crop yields. They strengthen families, communities, and entire food systems.

“WISE Nepal didn’t just teach us about farming,” Ram Maya says with pride.

“They helped us believe that women farmers can lead.”
