Nutrient Expert Tool

WISE Nepal is implementing the Nutrient Expert® digital decision-support tool to transform fertilizer management practices among smallholder farmers in Nepal. This project enables site-specific, crop-specific, and climate-smart nutrient recommendations, helping farmers increase yields, reduce production costs, and protect soil and environmental health.

Nepali farmers often rely on blanket fertilizer recommendations or traditional practices, resulting in nutrient imbalance, low productivity, soil degradation, and unnecessary emissions. By deploying Nutrient Expert through local extension systems, WISE Nepal bridges the gap between science and field-level adoption.

This initiative directly supports:

  • Food security

  • Climate resilience

  • Women-led agricultural innovation

  • Sustainable intensification of farming systems

What is the Nutrient Expert® Tool?

Nutrient Expert® is a science-based digital advisory tool developed by international agricultural research organizations such as CIMMYT and IRRI.

It provides field-specific fertilizer recommendations based on:

  • Crop type (maize, rice, wheat, vegetables)

  • Soil characteristics

  • Previous crop and residue management

  • Local climate and yield targets

  • Farmer resource constraints

Unlike generic fertilizer advice, Nutrient Expert follows the 4R Nutrient Stewardship Principle:

Right Source · Right Rate · Right Time · Right Place

Why This Project Matters in Nepal

Nepal’s agriculture faces multiple, interconnected challenges:

  • Over- or under-application of fertilizers

  • Rising input costs

  • Declining soil fertility

  • Climate variability (erratic rainfall, droughts)

  • Limited access to extension services in remote areas

Nutrient Expert directly addresses these challenges by empowering farmers with locally tailored, data-driven recommendations, leading to higher efficiency and resilience.

Project Objectives

  • Increase crop productivity (maize, rice, wheat, vegetables)

  •  Reduce excessive fertilizer use and production costs

  •  Improve soil health through balanced nutrient application

  • Lower greenhouse gas emissions from fertilizer misuse

  • Strengthen local capacity through training and digital literacy

  • Empower women and youth as agri-extension champions
